Powerful, edgy, beautiful.
ReplyDeleteCompelling, moving, delightfully teetering on the edge of a modern madness and moments of a sense of timeless divine beauty. An artistic human kaleidoscope with the heartbeat of a kathak.
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to congratulate you again on your show. It was so great to see Shyamala and Cynthia live, and the rest of the collective via the projections. There was so much creativity in the use of video projection and screens, with movement, lighting etc. One of my favorite segments was the one where Cynthia portrayed her experiences learning dance in India. There was a really nice playfullness to the way you handled very difficult issues.
ReplyDeleteI think overall the performance felt like seperate pieces put together, but I know that technical difficulties did prevent us from seeing a good chunk of what would have been there. I really liked the part where Shyamala discussed and acted out the internal struggle, and then ended with a question to the audience. The part with the cloth over you was also really powerful. The first scene felt a bit disjointed to me. It's purpose wasn't necessarily lost on me, but it seemed less smooth than some of the other segments.
I love the experimentation that I see all four of you and your multimedia artist working on. I think it was Anjali's segment where she danced and spoke about growing up and seeing her voice slowly disappear. It was a powerful piece, but it could really be shot in a way that brings more of that out. Of course you are struggling with many technical issues in bridging the distances between all of you to bring this all together. The fact that you are even making that distance work is so commendable and exciting.
It was really cool the way skype etc was used and made me think more about the kinds of collaborations that are possible now. Seeing those parts where you were actually discussing the piece was a great way to see different ways that people can come together. The power of community transcends geographic distances. What a powerful way of showing it, not just as performers, but as people, and of course women.
Perhaps as you continue to incorporate more video, you can play a bit more with cuts and closeups, editing etc in some of the clips that are not meant to be chat sessions. I know it is all a lot to do, just some food for thought. I'd have to watch the whole piece more to give more detailed feedback, but I'm just sharing out of a real sense of appreciation for what you have done.
Anyway, I just wanted to send some feedback real quick. Thank you all for striving for the meaningful pieces that you continue to share with all of us. It is a real gift to have conscious people who are willing to devote their mind, body and voice to thought provoking and challenging issues in such innovative ways.
